Going viral

We heard it time and time again in 2020: Wear a mask, wash your hands, and social distance. In many cases, repetition is key.

But seven months into a global pandemic with cases still on the rise, it was clear that people were getting sick and tired of the overdone messaging.

Paired with the return to in-person learning, the fall of 2020 saw a surge of COVID-19 cases throughout communities. In Muncie, Indiana, one major contributor to the surge was Ball State University.

It became increasingly clear that engaging college students in proper precautions against the novel coronavirus would require a novel approach.

The Delaware County Health Department enlisted Intersection for a short-term, high-impact campaign blitz to college students. The month-long campaign saw three rounds of messaging, designed specifically to catch the attention of young adults on and around Ball State’s campus.

Door hangers were left on off-campus student houses and apartments, postcards were mailed to student neighborhoods, flyers were hung in prominent locations throughout campus, and social media ads targeted students.

The edgy, clever messaging and bright, bold designs paired to create “made-you-look” ads that caught on like a virus.
